From 1758 a call at the Cape Town became an appreciated necessity for the Swedish East Indiamen. The ships took on board provisions and put the sick ashore to the local hospital. Vegetables, live animals, poultry and of course, the famous Cape Wine, was brought onboard in large quantities. Anders Sparrman arrived with the Swedish East India company in 1772 and became famous for his studies of the South African nature. Another Swedish scientist at the Cape these years was Carl Peter Thunberg.
